As many as 14 people died, while 37 others were injured in rain related incidents in Punjab and Khyber Paktunkhawa during the last 24 hours, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.
According to data shared by Provincial Disaster Management Authority, in Punjab, eight people lost their lives and 37 were injured due to windstorms and heavy rain over the past 24 hours. In Gujranwala, three people died and 14 were injured in various rain-related incidents. In Pakpattan, two men died and two injured when the mud roof of a house collapsed in rain.
Two people were killed, while two others were injured when the roof of their house collapsed in Pakpatan, while a woman was killed in Sahiwal.
Four people were injured at Band Road near Gulshan-e-Ravi in Lahore, while 12 were injured in different incidents of roof and wall collapse in Bahawalnagar, Sialkot and Mandi Bahauddin.
A man lost his life and three others, including a woman and a young child, were injured after the roof of a house collapsed in Kot Babu Khan area of Raiwind in Lahore.
According to Rescue 1122 officials, the roof suddenly caved in, trapping the occupants under the debris. Rescue teams rushed to the scene and carried out an operation to remove those trapped underneath the rubble.
The injured were provided with first aid before being shifted to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment. Rescue officials confirmed that the injured include a woman and a minor child.
Police said the body of the deceased has been shifted to the morgue for legal formalities.
Rescue sources stated that the roof was old and had been constructed with wooden beams. Continuous rainfall had weakened the structure, causing it to collapse.
Authorities have urged residents living in old and unsafe buildings to take precautionary measures, especially during the ongoing rainy season, to prevent similar incidents.
Meanwhile, after the deaths of two more people, the death toll from rains and floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa climbed to 14 on Wednesday. As many as 19 people have been injured. According to the PDMA, heavy rains over the past three days have caused numerous low-lying areas to become inundated. The rains and flooding have completely destroyed six houses, while 22 others have sustained partial damage.
A two-year-old child lost his life after being trapped under the debris when the roof of his family's house collapsed during heavy monsoon rains in the Tora Khola area of Zhob district.
According to sources, rainfall also caused widespread damage to several houses in Zhob city and its surrounding areas, leaving many families affected.
Following the incident, Assistant Commissioner Zhob, Muhammad Naveed Alam, immediately visited the affected area to assess the situation.
During the visit, he inspected the damaged houses and reviewed extent of the destruction caused by the recent rains.
Speaking on the occasion, the assistant commissioner said that a large number of houses in Tora Khola had been damaged due to heavy rainfall. He confirmed that the collapse of a room in one of the houses had resulted in the tragic death of a two-year-old child.
Muhammad Naveed Alam directed the concerned authorities to provide all possible assistance to the affected family and ensure that necessary relief measures are taken without delay. He assured that the district administration stands with the affected families during this difficult time.
He further stated that a comprehensive assessment of the losses would be carried out and relief operations would be initiated as soon as possible to support those affected by the disaster.
Meanwhile, local residents have urged the government to provide immediate financial assistance to the affected families and to take emergency measures for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of rain-damaged houses.
On the other hand, the Met Office forecast widespread intermittent thundershowers for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Islamabad, Punjab, North-East Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan during the next 24 hours.
Heavy falls (at times very heavy) may also occur at a few places during the period, it added.
The Met Office predicted that Islamabad would continue to receive intermittent rainfall today.
It further said that rain could be heavier at some places. On the other hand, rain lashing the federal capital for the last two days has resulted in considerable drop in temperatures as the maximum temperature was expected to reach 27 degrees Celsius today in the afternoon.
Breeze was blowing in the morning at the speed of 14 kilometers per hour, while the level of moisture in the air stood at 96 per cent.
Lahore to receive more rain
The weather department also forecast rain for Lahore on the third consecutive day on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, temperatures have plummeted in the city of gardens following two days of rain.
The maximum temperature in the city will go up to 30 degrees Celsius.
Breeze was blowing in the city at the speed of 13 kilometers per hour, while the level of moisture in the air was recorded at 88 per cent.
On Tuesday, 24News TV channel reported that 12 people have died while 15 have been injured as flash floods, resulting from torrential rains, have wreaked havoc in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
Roofs and walls of 14 houses have been blown away, while a considerable damage has also been caused to roads and flyovers.
Thousands of tourists have been left stranded due to the closure of Naran Road.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), most of the losses have been reported from Peshawar, Khyber, Mardan, Mansehra, Abbottabad and Kurram.
