Federal Minister for Power Owais Leghari has issued strict directives to the chairmen and chief executive officers (CEOs) of all power distribution companies (Discos) to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply throughout the sacred month of Muharram-ul-Haram.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, in a formal letter addressed to all relevant officials, the minister emphasised the urgent need for advance repairs and preventive measures, particularly at locations where religious gatherings (Majalis) and processions (Juloos) are expected.
Owais Leghari noted that millions of mourners participate in these gatherings across the country and warned that this year’s Muharram may coincide with intense heatwaves, making reliable electricity more critical than ever.
He instructed the formation of emergency response teams in every DISCO, adding that these teams must remain on high alert, especially on Youm-e-Ashura (10th Muharram).
The minister stressed the importance of maintaining continuous communication with local authorities during the holy month.
He also directed that religious institutions, especially Imambargahs and mosques, must be informed in advance of any scheduled maintenance or potential load management.
To prevent disruptions, Leghari ordered that standby generators and UPS systems be placed at all sensitive locations. In the event of unexpected grid failures, backup electricity must be supplied without delay.
He further mandated that technical and operational teams remain available around the clock (24/7) and that dedicated control centres be established at every level.
The minister was firm in stating that no negligence or delays will be tolerated in implementing these directives. Finally, he instructed that a detailed report on the preparedness measures be submitted to the Power Division.
