A Casablanca court on Thursday sentenced former Moroccan minister Mohamed Moubdii to 13 years in prison over corruption charges, his lawyer said.
Moubdii has been detained since 2023 after a complaint from the Moroccan Association for the Protection of Public Property, which alleged corruption against the former official in awarding public contracts by the municipal council of Fquih Ben Salah, which Moubdii had chaired since 1997.
Defence lawyer Brahim Amoussi told AFP an appeal had been planned, adding that he could not provide further details on the sentence.
Moubdii was "sentenced to 13 years in prison" along with "a fine of 30 million dirhams" ($3.2 million), Amoussi added.
Moubdii was a minister between 2013 and 2016 and is a leader in parliament of the centre-right Popular Movement.
His election to chair parliament's justice and legislation committee sparked outrage on social media, and he has since resigned from the post.
It is rare for politicians accused of graft to be arrested or jailed in Morocco.
