Fisheries research centre will be set up in Karachi: Minister

Federal Maritime Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has announced setting up a fisheries research centre at Korangi Fish Harbour in Karachi, reported 24NEwsHD TV channel.

The minister said on Thursday that the fisheries and aquaculture research and training centre will be set on 10 acres of lands.

Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the plan is to establish a comprehensive aqua echo system at Korangi Fish Harbour, which a supply chain from fish catching, farming, processing and export will be available.

The minister said the aim is to modernize the fisheries sector in order to promote the country’s blue economy.

He said fisheries sector’s share in Pakistan’s GDP is less than 0.5 percent.

“We expect better income and surge in exports through this research centre,” he added.

“We will use modern technology for environment-friendly farming,” he said and added this will create new job opportunities for the youth and the fishermen.
