Bollywood sensation Madhuri Dixit, now celebrated as one of the most admired stars in Hindi cinema, has reflected on a far less glamorous chapter from the beginning of her career, when she was subjected to repeated scrutiny over her looks and unsolicited advice about how a “heroine” should appear.
In a recent interview with Nayandeep Rakshit for his YouTube channel, the veteran actor spoke candidly about the comments she faced in the mid-1980s, long before she delivered her first major hit.
Despite her later superstardom, Madhuri revealed that she was frequently criticised for her appearance, including her facial features.
She recalled being told to change various aspects of how she looked and admitted that the remarks unsettled her at the time.
Turning to her mother for reassurance, she found comfort in advice that initially felt hard to believe.
As Madhuri explained, “A lot of people told me when I had just started, do this, how is your nose, your this, your that. I used to go and say, ‘Mom, they’re saying this.’ And my mom would say, ‘Don’t worry about it. Once you have a successful movie, that’s the very thing they’ll love about you.’”
Although she struggled to accept her mother’s confidence back then, everything changed after the release of Tezaab.
The film became a massive success and turned Madhuri into an overnight sensation, proving her mother’s words right. With success came acceptance, and the criticism that once followed her began to fade.
Looking back, Madhuri noted how the narrative around her appearance shifted entirely once she became a star. “After Tezaab, nobody said anything about being skinny or being this or that. People just accepted me for who I am,” she said.
Drawing from her own experience, she now shares the lesson with younger actors entering the industry, urging them not to conform to rigid expectations.
“Even today, I tell the new girls: Don’t try to be in a mould. Don’t say this is how a heroine should look. If you’re different, that’s a uniqueness you have. Play on that.”
On the professional front, Madhuri was most recently seen in the web series Mrs Deshpande, directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, in which she plays a serial killer, a striking departure from many of her earlier roles.
The series is currently streaming on JioHotstar. Speaking separately about the project, she expressed gratitude to filmmakers like Kukunoor for offering her complex and unconventional roles at this stage of her career, allowing her to continue reinventing herself decades after her debut.
