At least 40 villages in Bangladesh’s Netrokona district have been flooded after heavy rain and runoff from the hills of India’s Meghalaya state caused rivers along the Bangladesh-India border to overflow, local officials and residents said.
The flash floods affected parts of Kalmakanda and Durgapur upazilas, where rapidly rising water submerged roads, damaged property and created severe waterlogging.
Water flowing through the Mahadeo, Ganeshwari and Mangleswari rivers entered villages in the Kharnai, Rangchati and Lengura unions at high speed, according to local sources.
Several government primary school buildings were reportedly damaged by the strong current. Fish from numerous ponds were also swept away after the banks were breached, causing losses to local fish farmers.
Residents and officials from the Bangladesh Water Development Board said water from the Meghalaya hills began entering the border rivers late on Tuesday night.
The water spread across surrounding areas overnight, triggering a sudden flood situation and disrupting movement between villages.
Authorities were assessing the damage as residents waited for water levels to recede.
