In a heart-stirring display of quick thinking and compassion, a nurse in India’s Haryana state saved the life of a young accident victim whom bystanders had presumed dead.
The dramatic rescue unfolded in Karnal city, where a road accident left a young man unconscious and lying motionless on the roadside.
Onlookers, believing he had succumbed to his injuries, stood by without intervening.
At around 10 PM, Ankita Maan, a nursing supervisor at a private hospital for the past two and a half years, happened to be driving through the area. She was on her way to buy ice cream for her son when she noticed a gathering of people and stopped to check what had happened.
Upon inspecting the scene, Ankita found a young man lying on the ground, motionless and severely injured. When she inquired, bystanders told her the victim was dead.
However, drawing upon her medical training, Ankita immediately checked the man's pulse.
To her surprise, she discovered faint signs of life.
Without wasting a moment, Ankita began administering Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)—an emergency medical procedure used when someone's heartbeat or breathing has stopped.
Her efforts paid off. The victim’s breathing resumed, stunning the crowd that had earlier believed he was beyond help.
Ankita then swiftly called for an ambulance and ensured that the injured man was transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains under medical care. Doctors later confirmed that the timely CPR was critical and had likely saved his life.
Medical professionals noted that the man had vomited after the accident, and food had become lodged in his windpipe, obstructing his breathing—a condition that, left untreated, could have led to death within minutes.
