Sindh is set to hold local government by-elections tomorrow (Wednesday), with voters across 14 districts heading to the polls to fill 28 vacant seats.
According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), 128 candidates are contesting in the by-elections, while 243,187 registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots.
Polling will take place in the districts of Karachi East, Karachi West, Keamari, Ghotki, Sukkur, Khairpur, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Matiari, Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Dadu, Badin, and Thatta.
The vacant positions include two district council members, six chairmen, seven vice-chairmen, and 13 general or ward members.
To oversee the electoral process, the ECP has deployed 14 district returning officers, 21 returning officers, and 21 assistant returning officers. Additionally, 14 district monitoring officers and 21 monitoring officers have been appointed to supervise the polls.
Security has been heightened, with 1,512 personnel assigned to polling stations across the districts.
A total of 167 polling stations have been established — 17 exclusively for men, 17 for women, and 134 combined. Of these, 127 have been categorized as “highly sensitive,” 34 as “sensitive,” and only six as “normal,” reflecting elevated security concerns in some areas.
An ECP spokesperson stated that all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure transparency, security, and the smooth conduct of the elections.
