Advocate Akhtar Hussain, a member of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan, has resigned from his position citing controversies regarding appointment of new judges, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Monday.
Sources informed 24News TV channel that Akhtar Hussain had sent his resignation to the commission Chairman Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Yahya Afridi.
The sources further said that Akhtar Hussain, who was the representative of the Pakistan Bar Council in the commission, called it a day because he was unhappy with the recent appointments of judges to the Supreme Court (SC).
In his resignation letter, he wrote that he could not get on with his job because he did not agree with appointments.
In his resignation letter, Akhtar Hussain stated: "The Pakistan Bar Council unanimously nominated me thrice as a member Judicial Commission of Pakistan and I continued to discharge my responsibilities to the best of my abilities...however, on present controversies with regard to judicial appointments, I am unable to continue and, hereby, resign as being member of JCP and sending a copy of this resignation to the Pakistan Bar Council for making new nomination as provided under the Constitution."
Akhtar Hussain also expressed gratitude to the JCP members and assured them of his continued support for judicial and democratic institutions. "I pay regards to all the Hon'ble members of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan and assure you and all the members that I will continue to make all efforts for development and independence of judicial and democratic institutions."
