Another prisoner died during medical treatment at Malir Jail in Karachi, taking the number of inmate deaths to three within the last 20 days, sources told 24NewsHD TV Channel.
According to documents obtained by the media, Sindh's 23 jails have a total capacity of 14,000 prisoners, but they are currently housing more than 27,000 inmates. Sources said Karachi Central Jail, which has a capacity of 2,400 prisoners is currently housing around 8,000 inmates.
Malir Jail has a capacity of 2,200 but is accommodating around 5,500 prisoners and Hyderabad Central Jail with a capacity of 1,500 inmates, currently houses around 3,000 prisoners. According to sources, the continuous rise in the prison population has further made worse the capacity crisis in Sindh's jail system.
