Actress Hayley Atwell has revealed she was eight-and-a-half months pregnant while filming an intense fight sequence for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the latest and final instalment in the long-running action franchise.
The 43-year-old British star made the revelation during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, calling it a “Fallon exclusive” as she spoke publicly about the moment for the first time.
“During this fight sequence—we came back to it a few times to add a few elements to it—and in this clip, I'm actually eight-and-a-half months pregnant,” Atwell told Fallon, just before introducing a preview from the film.
She added that the production team was incredibly supportive and offered to use a stunt double for the scene. However, Atwell insisted on performing it herself. “I was like, ‘No! I’ve worked too hard. Let me do it.’ So I did it, and here it is.”
Atwell stars alongside Tom Cruise, who reprises his iconic role as Ethan Hunt in The Final Reckoning, the eighth film in the Mission: Impossible series, which began in 1996 and has become one of the most successful action franchises in cinema history. Known for its globe-trotting plots, daring stunts, and high-octane sequences, the series has grossed over $3.5 billion worldwide.
Atwell joined the franchise in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023), playing Grace, a skilled thief-turned-agent who becomes a key figure in Hunt’s final mission. Her role was praised for bringing fresh energy to the ensemble and adding emotional complexity to the storyline.
The star gave birth to her first child with her music producer beau Ned Wolfgang Kelly last year.
The couple got engaged in April 2023, with Kelly gushing on Instagram at the time, "I'd never had any interest in getting married… until I met this extraordinary woman."
Sharing a photo of them side-by-side while the actress flashed her glinting diamond ring, he wrote, "Lucky me. Arrived in Venice at 10am.
"Around midday, the love of my life and I got engaged in the kitchen of this strange apartment full of porcelain ducks, with a bloke outside the window murdering 'My Way' on the accordion. A perfect start to the rest of our lives together."
The British entertainer explained to Daily Mail that year, "We had rented this Airbnb that had lots of shelves with porcelain ducks on them, so it was quite a surreal setup."
"My fiancé was in his [underwear] in the kitchen, and there was an accordion playing outside our window — which was timed perfectly but not planned," she confirmed.
