Vice President of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Sherry Rehman Monday strongly condemned recent remarks by India’s Defence Minister concerning Sindh, calling them “provocative and intolerable.”
In a statement, Rehman said Sindh’s historical and political identity is firmly rooted in Pakistan’s statehood.
She noted that Sindh was the first provincial assembly to pass a resolution in favour of joining Pakistan even before the independence of 1947, demonstrating its sovereign choice.
She highlighted that during British rule, Sindh resisted being subsumed under the Bombay Presidency and successfully secured its separation on April 1, 1936. This, she stated, underscored the province’s independent political character long before Pakistan was formed.
Rehman said the remarks by the Indian minister appeared aimed at escalating regional tensions rather than fostering stability. She urged India to focus on the welfare and rights of its own citizens rather than making inflammatory statements about Pakistan.
She stressed that lasting peace in South Asia requires a just and lawful solution to the Kashmir dispute and adherence to relevant UN resolutions.
Rehman said Pakistan has consistently supported peaceful, lawful and diplomatic engagement, while remaining fully committed to protecting its sovereignty and the rights of its people.
The PPP senator added that sectarianism and aggressive rhetoric only fuel instability, emphasizing that Pakistan’s stance remains grounded in international law and responsible diplomacy. All states, she said, must act sensibly for sustainable peace in the region.
