Former Nigeria international striker Michael Eneramo has died after collapsing during a friendly football match in Kaduna, with initial reports indicating a suspected heart attack, officials and local media said.
The Nigeria Football Federation said that the 40-year-old was participating in a friendly match when he completed the first half without incident.
However, just five minutes into the second half, he suddenly collapsed on the pitch without any physical contact.
Medical staff provided immediate assistance before he was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors later confirmed his death.
Eneramo, widely known for his physical strength and aggressive playing style, earned the nickname “The Tank” during his professional career.
The Nigeria Football Federation said early medical assessments suggest a cardiac arrest as the likely cause of death, though further details are expected following a full examination.
Eneramo enjoyed a notable career as a forward, representing Nigeria internationally and playing for several clubs across Africa and Europe, earning a reputation as a powerful and clinical striker.
NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi described the news as devastating. “I am short of words at this moment,” he said. “I can only pray that God will grant him eternal rest and also grant his loved ones and the Nigerian football fans the fortitude to bear the loss.”
