Jameela Jamil has raised alarm over tennis legend Serena Williams’ promotion of a GLP-1 weight loss drug, warning fans about the serious risks linked to such medications.
In a lengthy Instagram post, The Good Place star criticized Williams for endorsing the drug without addressing its potential side effects. Jamil argued that celebrities often enjoy access to top medical support that ordinary people cannot afford.
“Serena Williams is selling GLP-1s,” Jamil wrote. “These so-called ‘miracle’ weight loss drugs come at a price. They can lead to paralysis of the gastric system, pancreatitis, cancer, hair loss, osteoporosis, malnutrition, thyroid issues, and even depression.”
She further cautioned that people who abruptly stop taking the drug risk regaining even more weight than before, adding that such treatments require close medical supervision, blood tests, and a proper fitness plan.
Jamil also pointed out Williams’ personal connection to the company, noting that her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, is an investor in Ro, the telehealth firm behind the drug campaign.
“This is not about Serena’s body,” Jamil clarified. “It’s about transparency. Celebrities should be honest about the risks, not just the results.”
Williams, 43, recently revealed on Today that she shed 31 pounds with the help of the drug, saying she wanted to reduce pressure on her knees and manage health issues linked to diabetes in her family.
The seven-time Wimbledon champion defended her decision, stressing that the medication was not a “shortcut” but a way to finally reach her healthy weight after years of struggle.
