The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday announced its judgement on a petition filed by the Kissan Board against the delay on part of the government in announcing the wheat support price.
Announcing the verdict, the court said that government departments did not set the wheat support price in commensurate with the expenses farmers incurred on wheat production.
The judgement written by Justice Sultan Tanvir Ahmad spreads to nine pages.
The court also made part of its judgement a report of the agriculture department on the cost of wheat production.
According to agriculture department’s report, the cost of 40kg wheat production is Rs3,553, the judgement said.
According a law officer of the Punjab government, a law has been enacted to determine the wheat support price.
The judge however ruled that government departments did not proceed in line with the existing law on wheat support price in the wheat harvest season. As a result, he said, small farmers are suffering. He said that government departments admitted wheat makes major part of food in Pakistan.
The court had earlier reserved its judgement on a petition filed by Kissan Board President Zafar Hussain.
