The federal government on Wednesday released Rs27 billion to prevent an increase in petrol and diesel prices, according to an official statement issued by the Ministry of Finance.

The funds have been provided as the first installment to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) to cover price differential claims. Officials said the move is aimed at shielding consumers from the impact of rising global oil prices.

The Ministry of Finance stated that the funds were released on the instructions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and were drawn from the government’s Austerity Fund. The allocation was made as part of broader efforts to protect the public from inflationary pressures linked to fuel costs.

According to the statement, the government arranged these funds by cutting down on its own expenditures, reflecting a commitment to prioritise public relief despite fiscal constraints.

Authorities emphasized that additional measures are under consideration to further ease the burden on citizens, as the government seeks to balance economic stability with public welfare.

The announcement reiterated that the government remains determined to provide maximum relief to the public while staying within its budgetary limits, amid ongoing economic challenges.
