Australian actress Cate Blanchett stole the spotlight on Saturday evening as she graced the red carpet at the closing ceremony of the 78th Cannes Film Festival in a show-stopping ensemble.
The 56-year-old Oscar winner exuded timeless elegance in a custom-made sleeveless black gown by Louis Vuitton, complete with a sweeping train and a dramatic ruffled chiffon cape. Her blonde locks were styled in a chic, swept-back updo, perfectly complementing the bold sophistication of her look.
Blanchett, known for her red carpet finesse, completed her ensemble with diamond and ruby earrings and soft, understated glam makeup. The acclaimed actress waved and smiled for cameras before stepping into the Palais des Festivals to help present Cannes’ most prestigious award, the Palme d’Or.
Later, she appeared on stage alongside French actress Juliette Binoche, where the duo presented the coveted prize to Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi for his powerful drama It Was Just an Accident. Blanchett was all smiles as she handed over the honour, marking another memorable moment in her long-standing association with the world’s most celebrated film festival.
Blanchett’s red carpet appearance follows fresh remarks from her longtime co-star Richard Roxburgh, who praised her fearless approach to acting. Speaking on A Life of Greatness podcast, Roxburgh shared, “Cate is incredibly brave. She is so happy to make a complete idiot of herself… Totally shameless and unguarded.”
The duo, who first starred together in Oscar and Lucinda in 1997, also shared the stage in numerous theatrical productions, including the Broadway adaptation The Present, written by Blanchett’s husband Andrew Upton. Their friendship was commemorated with caricatures unveiled at New York’s iconic Sardi’s Restaurant in 2017.
Speculation around Blanchett’s possible retirement from acting has also resurfaced. In a recent interview with Radio Times, the TÁR actress hinted once again at stepping back from the industry, saying, “I'm giving up [acting]. My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious.”
Despite these statements, Blanchett continues to embrace new creative avenues. Most recently, she starred in a 90-minute monologue titled The Fever for BBC Radio 4, showcasing her enduring versatility and depth as a performer.
