The Punjab Safe Cities Authority has achieved international recognition in artificial intelligence management under the “Digital Punjab” vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, becoming Pakistan’s first public sector institution to receive a globally recognized Artificial Intelligence Management System certification.

According to a Safe City spokesperson, the authority obtained the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 Artificial Intelligence Management System Certification, placing it among a limited number of public sector institutions worldwide, including in South Asia, to achieve the milestone.

The spokesperson said the Punjab Safe Cities Authority developed its complete artificial intelligence infrastructure in-house rather than depending on external companies. The authority’s 12 internally developed AI systems were found compliant with international AI lifecycle standards.

The organization has also been recognized globally as a developer, integrator and effective user of artificial intelligence systems, the spokesperson added.

Officials said more than 24,000 cameras across Punjab are connected to the Safe City AI network, supporting surveillance, traffic regulation and policing operations.

The certification process involved multiple detailed audits by international experts from SGS, who reviewed the authority’s headquarters, operational units and AI infrastructure.

During the audit, international experts declared the authority’s AI systems, governance structure and operational mechanisms to be of world-class standards, according to the spokesperson.

The globally recognized systems include Smart Vision AI, facial recognition technology, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), intelligent traffic management, crime analytics and AI-based governance monitoring systems.

The spokesperson said the Punjab Safe Cities Authority had become the only public sector organization in Pakistan to possess both ISO 27001 and ISO 42001 international certifications.

The achievement also places Punjab Police among a select group of policing organizations worldwide to secure recognition in AI governance and smart policing systems.

The spokesperson described the success as a major milestone for Pakistan, Punjab Police and modern smart policing at the international level.
