Pakistan has welcomed the United States’ decision to lift all sanctions against the Syrian Arab Republic, saying the move will support Syria’s economic recovery and help promote peace and stability in the region.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said in a post on X that Pakistan welcomed the US decision.
He said the decision would help the Syrian economy recover and grow, while also contributing to peace and stability in the region.
Dar said Pakistan continued to strongly support Syria’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity. He added that Pakistan was ready to further expand bilateral cooperation with Syria to help achieve lasting peace and prosperity.
The United States announced on August 25 that it had removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism. The designation had been in place for decades and had brought serious economic restrictions on the country.
The decision marked another step towards warmer relations between Washington and Damascus. The US State Department also removed the Al-Nusra Front, later known as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, from its list of global terrorist organisations. The US Treasury Department announced related sanctions relief.
Rebels led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham overthrew Syria’s long-time ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. The group’s leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, later became president as Syria began rebuilding after more than 13 years of civil war.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the decision would help attract more investment to Syria and support political and economic stability.
The Treasury Department said the measures were in line with President Donald Trump’s promise to provide sanctions relief to Syria. However, it stressed that lifting the restrictions did not change Washington’s approach to fighting global terrorism or its commitment to holding those responsible for wrongdoing in Syria accountable.
