High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, affects millions of people, particularly older adults, and is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and kidney damage. While medication plays an important role in managing the condition, doctors say diet is just as critical.

Experts point to salt, or sodium, as one of the biggest contributors to rising blood pressure. Consuming too much sodium causes the body to retain excess water, increasing blood volume and placing added pressure on blood vessels. The World Health Organization recommends limiting sodium intake to less than 2,300 milligrams a day, roughly the amount found in a teaspoon of salt. However, many people exceed this limit without realizing it.

Processed and packaged foods are often the main sources of hidden sodium. Canned soups, frozen meals, snack foods, and deli meats are typically loaded with salt. Even everyday items such as bread and breakfast cereals can contain surprisingly high levels. Health experts advise checking nutrition labels and choosing low-sodium alternatives whenever possible.

Sugary foods and beverages are another concern. Although sugar does not directly raise blood pressure, it can contribute to weight gain, which makes hypertension harder to control. Soft drinks, sweetened teas, and energy drinks are especially problematic due to their high sugar content. Research shows that people who consume large amounts of added sugar are more likely to develop high blood pressure and related heart conditions.

Unhealthy fats found in fried and fatty foods also pose a risk. Trans fats and saturated fats can raise cholesterol levels and stiffen arteries, restricting blood flow and increasing blood pressure. Common sources include fast food, fried snacks, baked goods, and pastries. Healthier fats, such as those in fish, nuts, seeds, and avocados, are considered better options for heart health.

Processed meats, including bacon, sausages, hot dogs, and salami, are particularly harmful. In addition to being high in sodium, they contain preservatives like nitrates, which have been linked to elevated blood pressure. Studies have shown that people who regularly consume processed meats tend to have higher blood pressure levels than those who limit their intake.

Alcohol can also affect blood pressure if consumed in excess. While moderate drinking may be safe for some individuals, heavy alcohol use can cause blood pressure to rise and reduce the effectiveness of blood pressure medications. Medical professionals recommend discussing alcohol intake with a healthcare provider.

To better manage high blood pressure, experts suggest limiting foods high in salt, sugar, unhealthy fats, and preservatives, while also moderating alcohol consumption. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can help protect the heart and support overall health.

Health specialists emphasize that even small dietary changes can make a meaningful difference. By making smarter food choices, individuals can better control their blood pressure and lower the risk of serious long-term complications.
