The Punjab home department has decided to standardize uniforms for jail officers and staff to ensure uniformity, discipline, and a professional appearance, reported 24NewsHD TV on Saturday.
In a notification, IGP Prisons Punjab has been asked to standardize the uniform pattern of officers and officials of Punjab prisons.
During inspections or visits of Punjab prisons conducted by officers of the Punjab Home Department, it has been observed with serious concern that prison officers are wearing uniforms of different patterns, resulting in a lack of standardization.
"The current disparity in dress codes has led to confusion and an unprofessional image," it added.
The IGP of Prisons has been instructed to compile a colored booklet detailing the new uniform specifications.
This guide will be distributed to all jails and relevant officials to ensure uniform implementation.
According to the new dress code, general jail staff will wear a grey-black shirt with two front pockets. The shirt will be full-sleeved in winter and half-sleeved in summer, paired with khaki trousers.
From April 1 to Sept 30, jail staff will wear grey-black round-neck or crew-neck t-shirts with either full or half sleeves, along with khaki pants.
Deputy superintendents and above officials will have a more formal dress code consisting of bush coats and jackets.
Female prison officers will wear a shirt-style frock or long tunic (qameez) with a khaki-colored shalwar as part of their official attire.
The IGP has already taken steps to ensure swift compliance by sending out colored copies of the updated dress guidelines to all jails in Punjab.
