Strongly reacting to the master plan drawn up by the Indian government to stop the flow of water from the River Indus to Pakistan, PPP Vice President Senator Sherry Rehman said on Monday that 10 hydro projects India had launched in Ladakh would impede the flow of the river downstream, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
She said that India was committing war terrorism against Pakistan under the guise of promoting tourism in the region. “The development works in Ladakh are actually an attempt by the enemy country to usurp Pakistan’s water resources,” Sherry said, adding, “Attempts being made by India to stop the flow of the river are not only a blatant violation of the Indus Waters Treaty, but also constitutes a breach of international law.”
She opined that the treaty was not merely a document, but the basis of peace in South Asia.
The PPP senator further said that stopping the flow of the river could have adverse effects on the environment. “Besides that, it could also have negative repercussions for India itself.”
She went on to say that India’s hydro projects could not only affect Pakistan’s agriculture, economy and environment, but of the entire region.
Sherry said that Pakistan would never compromise on its share in the water resources and would go to the last extent for its rights. “The country will give India a strong response on all fronts: legal, diplomatic and political.”
The PPP leader said that India should bear this thing in mind that its usurpation of Pakistan’s water resources could have catastrophic effects. “It should come to its senses now.”
