According to health experts, moderate consumption of jaggery during cold weather may provide relief from seasonal ailments such as cough, cold, and flu, as it naturally generates warmth in the body.
Nutritionists explain that jaggery is less processed than refined white sugar and contains certain essential nutrients.
It includes B vitamins (B1, B2, B6), vitamin C, as well as minerals such as iron, magnesium, potassium, and calcium.
Experts note that 100 grams of plain jaggery contains approximately 380 to 390 calories, slightly higher than white sugar.
However, from a nutritional standpoint, both jaggery and sugar are primarily composed of sucrose and serve as sources of quick energy.
Health professionals also pointed out that jaggery raises blood sugar levels more gradually than refined sugar, but this does not mean it can be consumed without caution.
One reason jaggery is more popular in winter is its perceived ability to help maintain body warmth, support immunity, and improve hemoglobin levels.
It is also considered beneficial for digestion and may help soothe sore throats and coughs when consumed in limited quantities.
Among its reported benefits are improved digestion, liver detoxification support, removal of toxins from the body, provision of essential minerals, and instant energy.
However, experts warn against excessive consumption.
Due to its high-calorie content, overuse of jaggery can lead to weight gain.
Although its glycemic index is lower than that of sugar, it can still affect blood glucose levels, making it a concern for people with diabetes.
Some individuals may also experience allergies or digestive discomfort.
Experts emphasize that jaggery should not be viewed as a complete replacement for sugar.
Because it tastes less sweet, people often consume it in larger amounts, which can be harmful to health.
