Jemima Khan, ex-wife of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, has publicly raised concerns over censorship of posts about her former husband on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. Khan claims that the platform’s AI chatbot, Grok, informed her that posts regarding Imran Khan’s prison conditions, solitary confinement, and his sons’ inability to visit him are being deliberately limited.
According to Jemima Khan, Grok indicated that “the Pakistani authorities have made criticism from Imran Khan’s immediate circle one of their top online enforcement priorities,” and that X is complying quietly enough to continue operating in the country. She described the throttling as “secret” and appealed directly to Elon Musk, urging him to uphold the platform’s commitment to free speech.
Khan highlighted that, because of these restrictions, it is extremely difficult for her or other supporters to publicize information about Imran Khan, whose name and image are reportedly banned on Pakistani television and radio. “Otherwise, there is little way for her to get the word out about Khan,” a statement noted, emphasizing the challenges in broadcasting details about his incarceration to a global audience.
The former journalist and aristocrat called on Musk to intervene, pointing out that posts from her account are being suppressed in a way that appears intended to limit international awareness of her former husband’s situation.
This comes amid ongoing concerns over Imran Khan’s treatment in Adiala Jail, where reports of solitary confinement and poor conditions have sparked both domestic and international scrutiny. Jemima Khan’s appeal underscores growing worries about the ability to freely share information on social media regarding politically sensitive issues in Pakistan.
