A civil court in Lahore is presently seized with hearing a petition filed by a woman in which she has demanded the payment of Rs2.5 million to her by her ex-husband on the grounds that it was written in her nikahnama (marriage certificate) that he will pay the amount to her in case he divorced her, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Wasim Rajput, counsel for the woman’s ex-husband Pervaiz, told the court on Saturday that there were two judgements by the Lahore High Court (LHC) in which it had been ruled that an insertion of a condition in the nikahnama that there would be the payment of amount either by the woman or the man in the event of a divorce was illegal.
He further told the court that his client had not included such a condition in the nikahnama and that it was inserted later.
The duty judge, after hearing the arguments from both parties, adjourned the case’s hearing until after the vacations.
