Pakistan's Champions Trophy campaign ended with an abandoned match as the hosts finished at the bottom of Group A on the points table at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium .
Persistent rain meant there was no action possible on the ground and the match referee decided to call it a day at 3:40 pm on Thursday. Both the team awarded one point each with Pakistan finishing at the bottom of the table due to poor net run rate than Bangladesh.
Both Bangladesh and Pakistan have already been eliminated from the eight-team event after suffering defeats at the hands of India and New Zealnad.
In view of persistent rain, the ground staff covered the pitch, while the spectators waited anxiously for the start of the match.
Earlier, 24News TV channel reported that as Pakistan and Bangladesh pulled up their socks to face each other , rain threatened to wash out the match as the Met Office had predicted thundershowers for upper parts of the country, including Rawalpindi.
The match had already lost its significance due to the defeats of both teams at the hands of their opponents, still some people have come to the stadium in the hope that this time, Pakistan team will do well and salvage its pride by inflicting defeat on Bengal Tigers.
While Pakistan has suffered humiliation at the hands of New Zealand and India, the Bangladeshi squad has bitten the dust in its matches against India and New Zealand.
Their losses in these matches mean they are no longer competing for a place in the semi-finals.
In Pakistan’s opening match, New Zealand posted a commanding total of 320/5, thanks to centuries from opener Will Young and wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham.
Pakistan’s bowlers found it difficult to contain the opposition, with Naseem Shah emerging as the most effective bowler, taking 2/63 in his 10 overs. Chasing a target of 321, Pakistan fell short, managing only 260 runs before being bowled out in 47.2 overs.
All-rounder Khushdil Shah top-scored with a 49 off 69 balls, while Babar Azam contributed 64 runs off 90 balls.
Facing a must-win clash against arch-rivals India in Dubai, Pakistan’s batting faltered once more, posting a modest total of 241 before being bowled out in the final over.
Saud Shakeel was the top scorer with 62 off 76 balls, striking five boundaries.
India comfortably chased the 242-run target, winning by six wickets with 45 balls to spare, courtesy of a brilliant century from Virat Kohli.
