Patrick Dempsey became visibly emotional as he opened up about the devastating loss of his longtime friend and Grey’s Anatomy co-star Eric Dane, describing the mourning period as “Very hard” and deeply life altering.
According to Dempsey, the passing of Dane at 53 following complications from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, it is a rare and progressive neurological disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement.
This left a profound impact on him, particularly given their two decade friendship that extended far beyond the set of the hit medical drama.
Speaking in a recent radio interview, the actor reflected on grief and the pain of losing loved ones, admitting that recent losses have weighed heavily on him.
Eric Dane, widely recognised for playing Dr Mark Sloan, affectionately known by fans as McSteamy, starred on Grey’s Anatomy from season two through season nine.
On the other hand, Patric Dempsey portrayed the beloved Dr Derek Shepherd, known as McDreamy, from the show’s premiere until his character’s exit in 2015.
While their characters initially clashed on screen, their dynamic soon evolved into a close, brotherly bond, a connection that mirrored their real life friendship.
Dempsey shared that he had been in contact with Dane shortly before his death, exchanging messages and keeping in touch as his health declined.

Despite the physical toll of the disease, Dempsey said his friend remained deeply loved by those around him.
He also expressed heartbreak for Dane’s two teenage daughters, noting how difficult the loss must be for his family. Dane shared his children with actress Rebecca Gayheart, and the pair had reportedly reconciled prior to his passing.
Remembering his co-star’s spirit, Patric Dempsey described Dane as someone who brought humour and lightness wherever he went.
He praised his effortless charisma on set and recalled how quickly they bonded during their earliest scenes together.
