Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman has announced nationwide protests on August 7, calling on people from all walks of life to participate in what he described as a historic movement against inflation and rising fuel prices.
Chairing a review meeting on the party's protest campaign, Hafiz Naeem said demonstrations would be held on major highways across the country, with protesters blocking roads to press the government for immediate economic relief.
He urged citizens to come out in large numbers, saying lakhs of people should participate in the demonstrations. He also appealed to the youth to join the movement by blocking roads with motorcycles.
The JI chief said that only ambulances would be allowed to pass during the protests, stressing that the party's movement would remain peaceful and democratic. He warned against any attempt to obstruct the party's constitutional right to protest.
Hafiz Naeem said the planned demonstrations would compel the government to provide relief to the public, demanding the immediate abolition of the petroleum levy and a review of agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
To mobilise support ahead of the nationwide protests, he announced that Jamaat-e-Islami would hold 20,000 corner meetings across the country.
The JI chief appealed to traders, lawyers, students, workers and members of other segments of society to actively participate in the August 7 protests.
