Punjab Child Marriage Restraint Ordinance, 2026 was challenged in the Federal Shariat Court (FSC) on Saturday, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Filed by Mufti Muhammad Aslam under Article 203-D of the constitution, the petition is a prayer to the court to declare the age limit of 18 years set for marriage in the ordinance ‘un-Islamic’.
The petitioner also prayed to the court to annul provisions of the ordinance declaring the marriage of underage boys and girls an offence.
He prayed to the court to review the legislation in light of Quran and Sunnah.
The petitioner also requested the court to order the government not to implement the ordinance.
On April 28, the Punjab Assembly passed the Child Marriage Restraint Bill 2026, which sets 18 years as the minimum legal age for marriage for both boys and girls and declares underage marriage a non-bailable offence.
