In a landmark judgement in a case of double murder, the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Saturday declared a video a basic and reliable testimony while eyewitnesses’ accounts contradictory and unreliable, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Justice Muhammad Tariq Nadeem authored the 30-page detailed verdict, which has been described as a judicial precedent.
The judge wrote that a video recording was acceptable as a ‘silent witness’, and that an unedited and forensically verified could become the basis of conviction.
The judge said that the court reviewed the video, forensic report and other relevant record in the case, and came to the conclusion that footage of the incident belied several claims made by the prosecution.
He observed that videos played an important role in helping judges reach a conclusion, and that they could be more reliable and impartial than the statements given by eyewitnesses.
However, declaring some of the pictures unverified, the court omitted them from the record.
