Hollywood superstar Ryan Gosling delighted fans with an unexpected appearance at a New York screening of Project Hail Mary, highlighting the crucial role audiences play in keeping theaters alive.
Speaking candidly to a packed crowd, Gosling emphasized that while streaming platforms continue to dominate, it is filmmakers’ responsibility to create experiences that make fans want to show up and enjoy the magic of cinema on the big screen.
“Six years ago, I got the manuscript of Project Hail Mary. [It’s] the most ambitious thing I’ll ever make; it seemed impossible. It was too good not to give it a shot. Six years later, we did it. Here we are, we’re all back in theaters. It’s not your job to keep them open, it’s our job to make things worth your time,” Gosling told the audience, according to Variety.
He added with his signature charm, “You’re about to go to another galaxy, make an alien best friend and save the stars. This movie is for you. Enjoy the trip!”
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and written by Drew Goddard, the 2026 sci-fi adventure is based on the novel by Andy Weir. Gosling stars as an astronaut who wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory, alongside Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, and Lionel Boyce.
The film premiered in London on March 9, 2026, and released in the U.S. on March 20 via Amazon MGM Studios. Receiving largely positive reviews, it has already grossed approximately $157 million worldwide.
