Osaka entered Court Suzanne Lenglen wearing a dramatic outfit featuring a black corset-style top and a long pleated skirt, layered over a glittering golden tennis dress that reflected brightly in the Paris sunshine.
The Japanese star compared her look to the sparkling lights of the Eiffel Tower at night, saying she wanted to capture a similar feeling through her appearance on court.
In a light-hearted remark, Osaka joked that she feared the chair umpire might ask her to leave the court because of how brightly the outfit was shining.
Alongside her fashion statement, Osaka also impressed with her performance, defeating Germany’s Laura Siegemund to advance to the second round of the tournament.
World number one Aryna Sabalenka praised Osaka’s style, saying the former world number one confidently expresses her personality both on and off the court.
