Despite the steps taken by the Punjab government, there is no marked reduction in smog as with the air quality index (AQI) recorded at 378, Lahore, the city of gardens, again topped the list of the world’s most polluted cities on Monday, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Indian capital New Delhi stood second in the world in terms of pollution, while Karachi was at the fourth position.
On the other hand, the weather in the capital city of Punjab is getting colder with each passing day.
The AQI over Syed Maratab Ali Road was recorded at 459; it was 436 over the US consulate, 424 over The Mall, 473 over Aamir Town and 300 over the Defence Housing Authority.
Doctors have advised people to first avoid travelling unnecessarily in order to prevent themselves from exposure to pollution, and secondly if going outside is necessary, wear facemasks before leaving their homes.
To the dismay of Lahorites, the Met Office forecast dry weather for the provincial capital and its suburbs during the next 24 hours.
It said that the maximum temperature in the city would be recorded at 23 degrees Celsius while the minimum at 14 degrees Celsius.
Educational institutions reopen in Punjab
On the other hand, educational institutions in Lahore and other nine Punjab districts reopened on Monday after a three-day smart lockdown that had been ordered on account of smog.
Attendance at schools, colleges and universities was as per routine; however, it was mandatory for the students to wear facemasks. Business activities resumed too.
At the same time, more and more people affected by smog are landing at Lahore’s hospitals.
Over 7,000 people visited the city’s five big hospitals during the last six days.
