Sahibzada Hassan Raza was made Chairman of Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) on Thursday.

The move comes days after a court convicted SIC Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza in a case related to May 9 violence, which was triggered by the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan.

Consequently, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) disqualified him as a member of the parliament and barred him from holding any political office.

Sahibzada Hassan Raza will remain the party chairman until the intra-party elections are held, according to a notification issued by the SIC.

On August 5, ECP disqualified nine lawmakers of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and and Hamid Raza was among them. A notification issued by the commission confirmed their disqualification and declared their seats vacant.
