Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said on Saturday that for decades Pakistan hosted the Afghan refugees, fought alongside them against the erstwhile Soviet Union, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Addressing Sirajuddin Haqqani, interior minister in the Taliban administration, in a tweet, the minister said that even today millions of Afghans lived in Pakistan. Pakistan acted as a mediator to settle disputes between different factions of Afghan militants. “But what Pakistan got in return?” he questioned.
You, he further said, on the contrary gave refuge to those who killed and maimed Pakistanis.
Asif went on to say that both Pakistan and Afghans had a common enemy, which was Russia, formerly known as Soviet Union, and it was the USA which had given both countries the assignment to target Soviet Union.
The minister said it was true that after 9/11, Pakistan became a NATO ally. “But there was an allegation against us that we facilitated the Haqqani Network,” he said, and asked Haqqani to tell the world whether there was any truth in such claims.
“After the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Afghanistan, the USA dumped us as well as you,” he said.
He reminisced that he had gone to Kabul where he had a meeting with Haqqani. “The only request I had made in my meeting with you was that don’t act as collaborators of our enemies. You had asked us for an amount. Pakistan was willing to give that amount. But you, Haqqani sab, did not give any guarantee.”
Asif said that the Pakistanis did not demand much from the Taliban. “We are happy here. You live happily in your country. You can allow our enemies to settle in your country. But don’t act as their collaborators; don’t allow the Afghan soil to be used against Pakistan,” he requested.
The minister concluded his tweet with these words: “Long Live Pakistan; made in USA Jihad.”
