A top former ally of President Donald Trump who remains a powerful voice on the US right on Saturday denounced the start of war against Iran as a "betrayal."
Marjorie Taylor Greene, who resigned her seat in Congress early this year, has had a bitter falling out with Trump but remains a major figure in the populist and isolationist hard-right that helped bring him to power.
Referring to the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement's longtime opposition to US military interventions, Greene called the huge attack on Iran ordered by the president "a lie."
Trump, she said, had been elected on promises of no more foreign wars and "to put America FIRST," she posted on X.
The US government, Greene said, has instead "spoon fed" lies to the public about Iran's alleged nuclear military ambitions as a justification for conflict.
"It's always a lie and it's always America Last. But it feels like the worst betrayal this time because it comes from the very man and the admin who we all believed was different and said no more," she added.
"We get a war with Iran on behalf of Israel that will succeed in regime (change) in Iran. Another foreign war for foreign people for foreign regime change. For what?"
The comments reflected the political risk for Trump, who has won backing from numerous prominent Republican members of Congress but could alienate his activist hard-right base.
Another influential figure on the right, broadcaster Tucker Carlson, described the attack on Iran announced by Trump early Saturday as "absolutely disgusting."
