The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday disposed of the petition, filed by former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan, seeking the court order to the Adiala Jail officials to arrange his telephonic talk with his sons, medical checkup from a family doctor and his meetings with the party leaders, along with instructions, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
IHC Chief Justice (CJ) Justice Aamer Farooq heard Imran’s plea.
Faisal Chaudhry, counsel for the former prime minister, and the Adiala Jail superintendent appeared in the court.
The CJ, on the occasion, asked the superintendent, “What kind of facilities are being provided to the plaintiff in the jail?”
The superintendent replied that all types of facilities, which were provided to B-Class prisoners, had been provided to the former prime minister. “The petitioner has been given the facility to read two newspapers and watch 16 TV channels. He has also been given a cook.”
As per the jail manual, he added, the prisoners were allowed to meet their family members and lawyers twice a week. “However, we arrange the petitioner’s meetings three to four times in a week.”
The superintendent further said that prior to Imran’s wife Bushra Bibi was handed a prison term in the Al-Qadir Trust case, she was allowed to meet her husband in the jail. “And now when she is a convict along with her husband, we will again arrange their meetings,” he added.
The chief justice said the petitioner had also requested for a telephonic conversation with his sons, who were abroad.
The superintendent replied that the telephonic talk could not be arranged because 8,000 other prisoners in the jail might challenge it. “There are prisoners from other countries as well. If we do so, it will become a precedent,” he said, adding, “Besides that, neither there is permission by the government nor the jail rules allow us to do that.”
Faisal Chaudhry reminded the court that it had allowed the PTI founder’s meetings with his family doctor.
The superintendent replied that best medical facilities were available in the jail. “Doctors examine the prisoners daily.”
