As the calls for banning young children from using social media platform are getting stronger, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered the federal government and other officials to submit replies regarding a petition seeking a ban on the use of social media by the children under the age of 16, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
LHC Chief Justice Aalia Neelum heard the petition on Wednesday filed by Aliya Saleem and others through Advocate Shiza Qureshi a day earlier.
Justice Aalia Neelum remarked that it was an important matter and a policy issue that should be addressed by the government.
Advocate Shiza Qureshi contended that social media was causing serious harm to the mental, moral and educational development of children. She said developed countries were also considering restrictions on social media use by underage children.
The lawyer informed the court that Australia and France had slapped a ban on children’s use of social media recently while Norway, Malaysia and New Zealand were in the process of legislating on the matter.
Shiza Qureshi asked the court to order a ban on social media use for children under 16 years of age.
Justice Neelum directed a law officer to seek instructions from the government and submit a report by February 16.
