Pakistan Railways intensifies efforts for ML-1 project funding

Pakistan Railways intensified its contacts with international financial institutions for funding of further sections of the ML-1 project, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Tuesday.

According to details, the World Bank and other financial institutions expressed their keen interest in investing in the ML-1 project.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Railways finalized its proposals for financing with other sections of the ML-1 project after Karachi-Rohri section.

Pakistan Railways started work after getting a nod from the federal government. Pakistan Railways forwarded these proposals to the World Bank, European Investment Bank, Islamic Development Bank, and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) 

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan Railways used an alternative option after China refused to invest in the project.

More than six international banks and companies expressed their interest in investing in the ML-1 project.

Earlier on July 22, 2026, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar urged the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to expedite processing of financing for Pakistan's Main Line-1 (ML-1) railway project, describing it as one of the government's flagship infrastructure initiatives during a meeting with senior ADB leadership at the bank's headquarters in Manila.
