The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has achieved a historic milestone by setting a new cargo handling record in its 138-year history, surpassing its previous highest throughput of 54.685 million tonnes, the 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Sunday.
According to the report, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry hailed the achievement as a clear indication of growth and development in Pakistan’s maritime sector.
He said the government was continuing reforms aimed at transforming Pakistan into a strong regional maritime and trade hub.
The minister stated that efforts had been accelerated to modernise and expand the country's ports, adding that improving investment, logistics and port infrastructure remained among the government's top priorities.
He also praised the leadership, officers and employees of the Karachi Port Trust for their dedication, professionalism and hard work in achieving the landmark performance.
KPT Chairman Admiral Shahid Ahmed said the port's operational efficiency, administrative capacity and overall performance had improved significantly in recent years.
He added that further measures would be taken to enhance Karachi Port’s competitiveness and strengthen its role in regional trade.
Officials described the new cargo handling record as a major success for Pakistan’s maritime industry and an encouraging sign for future growth in trade and logistics.
