Sir David Beckham was given a warm and ceremonial reception as he continued his charitable trip to India, marking another milestone in his work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
The former England captain, now 50, arrived in Mumbai and was treated to a traditional Hindu welcome, complete with floral bouquets, an aarti ritual, and the application of a red tika on his forehead, a mark often used during religious ceremonies and festive occasions.
Beckham, Britain’s newest knight of the realm, visited a local school for a four-hour engagement before being greeted by the colourful ceremony.
The aarti ritual involved chanting, the lighting of incense, and the waving of lamps, offering the football legend an authentic glimpse into local culture and customs.
In addition to the formal welcome, Beckham also enjoyed a hands-on lesson in preparing Dal Ki Chaat, a popular high-protein Indian street snack, reflecting his interest in cooking and local cuisine.
Sharing the experience on Instagram, Beckham wrote: “So touched by everyone’s kindness… Thank you for my traditional welcome and Dal Ki Chaat lessons. Making some beautiful memories in Mumbai.”
During his visit, Beckham also met children at the Cooperage Football Grounds, including 12-year-old Khushi and 10-year-old Rohit, who have found purpose and confidence through football. Khushi said, “I was always very quiet and withdrawn. Playing football helped me to open up and communicate better. I learnt how to interact with others and make decisions.”
Beckham’s engagements extended to a UNICEF-supported initiative aimed at making Mumbai a better place for children to live and play.
The former footballer praised the young participants’ resilience and ambition, noting, “I am humbled by the drive, resilience, and passion of the children and young people I met today who are fighting for change at an early age and having a say in their future.
They are truly inspirational and have conquered many challenges to be where they are today. Their journey is an important reminder that we must continue investing in children and young people.”
The visit highlighted Beckham’s ongoing commitment to using his global platform to support education, sports, and youth empowerment initiatives, while also embracing and celebrating local traditions.
