The number of pending cases in Punjab’s district courts has reached 1,479,280, with civil litigation accounting for the overwhelming majority of the backlog as of September 26, 2026.
Official figures show that 1,316,102 civil cases remain pending across district courts in the province, compared with 163,178 criminal cases.
The data shows that civil cases make up more than 1.3 million of the total pending caseload, far exceeding the number of criminal cases awaiting disposal.
Despite the large backlog, Punjab’s district courts disposed of 2,415,538 cases between January 1 and September 26 this year.
Of the cases decided during the period, 1,821,137 were civil cases, while 594,401 were criminal cases.
Lahore district courts alone have 309,983 cases pending, including 283,789 civil cases and 26,194 criminal cases.
The figures further show that Lahore’s district courts disposed of 780,185 cases from the beginning of the year through September 26.
The statistics indicate that civil litigation remains the biggest component of the pending caseload in Punjab’s district judiciary despite the disposal of more than 2.4 million cases during the first nine months of the year.
