The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has recommended extending school holidays in flood-affected districts as monsoon rains and widespread flooding continue to disrupt normal life, according to 24NewsHD TV on Wednesday.
The authority has proposed that schools in the affected areas should not reopen on 20 August as previously planned. The recommendation has been forwarded to the Punjab School Education Department for consideration, with officials citing the ongoing flood situation and the need to ensure the safety of students, teachers and school staff.
According to the proposal, educational activities will remain suspended until floodwaters recede and conditions are considered safe for schools to resume classes. Officials said the measure is intended to protect students and education workers while emergency response and recovery operations continue across the affected districts.
The PDMA has also directed authorities to assess the damage caused to schools and other government buildings by the floods. The Communication and Works Department has been instructed to prepare a detailed report on damaged and structurally unsafe buildings to support rehabilitation and reconstruction planning.
The recommendations form part of the provincial government's broader response to the ongoing monsoon emergency as authorities continue to monitor flood conditions and evaluate the impact on public infrastructure throughout Punjab.
