The Indian government has decided not to extend the tenure of Ravi Sinha as the chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India’s premier external intelligence agency. Instead, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration has appointed Prag Jain as the new RAW chief, 24NewsDH TV channel reported on Sunday.
The decision to change leadership at RAW is being viewed as part of a broader strategic recalibration by the Modi government, particularly in light of recent tensions with Pakistan. With Sinha’s term ending, the government has opted for a new face—one with deep operational experience focused on Pakistan.
Prag Jain’s background is closely linked to intelligence operations centred on Pakistan, signalling a potential tactical intensification in India's regional surveillance and counterintelligence efforts. Analysts believe that the leadership change reflects both political and strategic motivations, particularly as the Modi government looks to reinforce its national security credentials.
The move also comes amid growing criticism of RAW’s performance during the latest episode of cross-border tension. Many within India's security establishment were reportedly dissatisfied with the agency’s effectiveness, prompting a reassessment at the top.
Some experts argue that the shake-up is an attempt by the government to deflect attention from perceived intelligence lapses, while others interpret it as a sign of India’s increasing focus on regional rather than global strategic priorities.
With Jain’s appointment, it appears the Indian government is shifting from a broad international security posture to a sharper emphasis on local and regional intelligence objectives. His elevation is being seen as a symbol of this changing doctrine.
