Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday announced the subtraction of the PTV fee from the electricity bills, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Addressing the ceremony held to launch a power smart app, introduced by the Power Division of the Ministry of Energy under its ‘apna meter, apni reading’ initiative, the prime minister said that the government passed on the benefits of a reduction in oil prices in the international market to the power consumers.
He further said that negotiations with the independent power producers (IPPs) remained successful.
"The purpose of launching the app is to make consumers part of the system and introduce transparency in billing," he said, adding, "The feature provides consumers the facility to take photographs of their electric meters on the due date and then upload them on the app."
PM Shehbaz said that it would be on the basis of that picture that electricity bills will be sent to the consumers, whose readings will be preferred to those noted down later.
"The purpose of the system is to get rid of overbilling and miscalculations in reading," he said, and added, "The system is especially beneficial for those who are eligible for the subsidy announced by the government."
He said that the detection of electricity theft amounting to Rs500 billion was a big challenge.
