Pakistani actress and model Mariam Michael has courageously opened up about one of the most personal chapters of her life, revealing that she married at the age of 17 and divorced just two years later. Taking to her Instagram handle, Mariam shared a lengthy note, clarifying that her decision to speak publicly was not driven by a desire for sympathy but by a hope to normalize conversations around divorce.
“I'm sharing this not because I want sympathy or attention, but because I want to challenge the stigma surrounding divorce especially for women,” she wrote.
The actress disclosed that she had kept this chapter of her life private for years before realizing that silence only empowers shame.
“I got married at 17 and divorced at 19. We were two young people who simply weren't ready for marriage. Sometimes things don't work out, and that's okay. We chose to end our marriage with respect, and over the years we've both moved on. Today, there is no resentment, no bitterness, and no conflict between us. I genuinely wish him nothing but the best, and I know he wishes the same for me,” she shared.
Reflecting on the experience, Mariam said she refuses to erase any part of her past simply because it makes others uncomfortable.
“People often ask why I don't hide this part of my life. The answer is simple: because it's my story. I don't regret my past because it shaped the woman I am today. It taught me lessons I couldn't have learned any other way,” she wrote.
Questioning societal attitudes toward divorced women, Mariam asked why divorce continues to be viewed as something shameful when, in many cases, it simply reflects two people realizing they were not right for each other.
