The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is facing fresh uncertainty over its participation in the upcoming Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections under its party name and electoral symbol after the Supreme Court of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) suspended a recent High Court ruling in the party’s favour.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, the Supreme Court has stayed the 23 June 2026 judgement of the Azad Kashmir High Court concerning the registration of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (Azad Kashmir chapter) and constituted a full bench to hear the matter on 2 July 2026.
In its earlier ruling, the Azad Kashmir High Court had directed the Election Commission of Azad Jammu and Kashmir to formally register PTI (Azad Kashmir).
The decision had effectively cleared the way for the party’s candidates to contest the forthcoming Legislative Assembly elections under the party’s official electoral symbol, the bat.
However, the Azad Kashmir Election Commission challenged the High Court verdict before the Supreme Court, arguing that the lower court had granted relief beyond what had been sought in the original petition and had exceeded its legal jurisdiction.
Following a preliminary hearing, Chief Justice Raja Saeed Akram Khan suspended the High Court's decision, issued notices to the parties concerned and referred the matter to a full bench for detailed consideration.
PTI, meanwhile, has defended the High Court ruling, maintaining that the judgement was fully consistent with the law and the Constitution and should remain in force.
The Supreme Court’s decision to suspend the High Court order means that the issue of PTI (Azad Kashmir)’s registration and its right to contest elections under the bat symbol will remain unresolved until the full bench delivers its final verdict.
The outcome of the case could have significant consequences for the party's participation in the elections. If the full bench accepts the Election Commission’s appeal and overturns the High Court ruling, PTI (Azad Kashmir) may not be able to secure formal registration.
In that event, the party’s candidates would be unable to contest the elections under the PTI name or the bat symbol and could instead be required to enter the race as independent candidates, like Pakistan and Gilgit-Baltistan.
