Faisal Siddiqui, counsel for the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), on Thursday requested the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court (SC) to reject the review petitions filed against granting reserved seats to the PTI, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
During the hearing of the SIC’s reserved seats case, an interesting conversation took place between Siddiqui and the judges.
An eleven-member bench, headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan, heard the case.
Siddiqui said that no matter which party got the seats: the PTI or the SIC, it was one and the same thing.
Justice Jamal Mandokhel remarked that if that were the case, the movie would flop.
Siddiqui replied that regardless of the outcome of the case, he would accept the court’s verdict gleefully.
Justice Musarrat Hilali asked whether it would not have been appropriate to tell independent candidates not to join the party, which had not even contested the general elections.
Addressing the SIC’s lawyer, Justice Aminuddin remarked that he was creating issues for his client.
Siddiqui said that in a democracy, every political party should be treated alike.
Justice Jamal Mandokhel questioned, “If the candidates make decisions on their own, will you not call it a democracy?”
Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar asked whether a judge could give a verdict by going beyond the constitutional scope.
SIC’s lawyer said that some judges had committed blunders while pronouncing verdicts. “Every human being is likely to make mistakes,” Siddiqui added.
The court’s hearing was then adjourned until June 16.
