Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said no casualties or injuries were reported after a maritime accident involving two foreign ships near Karachi Port, adding that investigations were underway to determine the causes of the incident.
In a statement issued on Friday, the minister said the accident occurred during the night of May 28 outside the operational limits of Karachi Port.
He said initial information suggested that negligence on the part of the masters of both vessels led to the accident near the port area.
Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said a detailed report on the maritime incident had been sought from the relevant authorities.
“The affected cable-laying ship was safely shifted to the port with the assistance of Karachi Port Trust tugs,” the minister said, while paying tribute to port staff for their timely response and effective handling of the situation.
He added that the government and all relevant agencies were fully mobilized to ensure maritime safety and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Chairman Karachi Port Trust Admiral Shahid Ahmed said maritime activities at Karachi Port were continuing normally despite the incident.
He added that all possible technical and operational assistance had been provided to the affected vessel to ensure safe handling and minimise disruption to port operations.
Authorities said investigations into the incident were continuing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the collision.
