Lauren Macuga, a rising star in US alpine skiing, will miss the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics in February after suffering a season-ending knee injury in training, the US ski federation said Friday.
"Lauren Macuga fell in training on Friday morning and injured her right knee, which will require surgery. She'll miss the remainder of the season," US Ski and Snowboard said in a statement posted on social media.
The federation gave no further details but Macuga indicated in an Instagram post that she damaged her anterior cruciate ligament.
"RIP acl, see you all next year," she wrote.
Macuga, 23, had been preparing to race in the women's World Cup giant slalom at Copper Mountain, Colorado, on Saturday.
She had posted her first alpine World Cup victory last season with a super-G triumph at St. Anton in January.
She was second in a downhill at Kvitfjell and earned world championship super-G bronze in Saalbach, Austria, in February.
She had been aiming to compete at Milan-Cortina alongside her two sisters, Alli in mogul skiing and Sam in ski jumping.
